Peter Oundjian’s TSO Finale
Documenting historic milestones for a world-class symphony orchestra requires deep acoustic awareness. Specifically, this work demands precise timing under strict performance conditions. On June 30th, 2018, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra commissioned me to photograph Peter Oundjian’s emotional final performances. Furthermore, these concerts concluded his celebrated 14-year tenure as Music Director of the TSO.
The landmark concert featured Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, an enduring masterpiece of classical music. Moreover, the stage brought together an all-Canadian cast of stellar soloists—including Kirsten MacKinnon, Lauren Segal, Tyler Duncan, and Andrew Haji—alongside the renowned Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. I operated with absolute acoustic discretion during quiet movements. Consequently, my role captured the emotional gravity of Oundjian’s farewell and the massive scale of the ensemble. Because of the historical significance of the event, my photography was featured across major classical music reviews and editorial reports, including Ludwig Van Toronto, The WholeNote, and Opera Ramblings. Orchestral Finale & Concert Photography Scope:
Documenting a monumental conductor farewell under strict acoustic protocols demands rigorous technical preparation and artistic precision. Therefore, my production scope for this performance included:
- Acoustic Discipline & Stealth: I operated under rigorous silence policies to ensure zero shutter noise disruption during intimate, delicate orchestral movements.
- Conductor & Maestro Capture: I tracked Peter Oundjian’s final emotive gestures and podium presence on the Roy Thomson Hall stage.
- Ensemble & Choir Integration: I framed the massive scale of the orchestra, featured vocal soloists, and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir under theatrical lighting.
- Institutional Archive Delivery: I provided polished, high-resolution visual archives tailored for orchestra marketing, media distribution, and historical documentation.
