TIFF 2020: Cityview Drive In
Film festival event photography during a global pandemic requires extreme adaptability and a historic pivot from traditional indoor venues. Specifically, I was the sole official photographer commissioned to document the 45th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2020 at the Visa Skyline Drive-In at CityView in Toronto.
While past festivals drew tens of thousands of viewers into packed indoor cinemas alongside screaming fans, A-list celebrities, and bustling red carpets, the 2020 reality was vastly different. Furthermore, strict public-health protocols and government lockdowns limited indoor screenings to micro-audiences of 20 distanced people. Consequently, the festival moved outdoors to a retro format—the drive-in theatre. My role was to capture this unique, quiet chapter in cinematic history as moviegoers watched premieres from inside their vehicles beneath the city skyline. Pandemic-Era Festival & Drive-In Event Photography Scope:
Documenting a scaled-down, socially distanced film festival demands total discretion, a unique artistic perspective, and rigorous adherence to safety protocols. Therefore, my production scope for this historic assignment included:
- Drive-In Atmosphere & Car Culture: Capturing the striking visual of packed rows of vehicles, horn-honking audience reactions, and outdoor projection screens under the downtown Toronto skyline.
- Distanced Screening Documentation: Preserving the intimate, restricted-capacity indoor theatre screenings enforced by strict public health regulations.
- Historical Archive Creation: Delivering a poignant, one-of-a-kind visual record of a festival operating entirely without crowds, red carpets, or traditional press lines.
- Press & Institutional Delivery: Supplying high-resolution editorial assets for festival archives and media distribution during an unprecedented cultural turning point.
Extraordinary cultural events require visual assets that capture the gravity and uniqueness of the moment. Are you hosting a specialized corporate gathering, unique outdoor activation, or high-profile event in Toronto? Contact me today to discuss how we can document your project’s history.
