TSO: A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald
Live orchestral performance photography requires an extreme level of physical discipline and acoustic awareness. Specifically, in June 2017, I documented the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) performing A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald live at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, celebrating the legendary jazz icon’s 100th birthday.
When you can hear a pin drop across the building during a pianissimo string movement, standard event photography rules go out the window. Furthermore, capturing the performance requires studying the conductor’s score and anticipating the action. Consequently, I mastered the split-second timing needed to creatively mask the mechanical click of a shutter during a heavy percussion crescendo.
